Short answer: The Superintendent or a designee decides on a closing or delayed opening, and the district says the decision is generally announced between 4:30 a.m. and 4:50 a.m. The district says not to rely on any one form of communication: check greenwichschools.org, the ParentLink call or email, local radio and television, and CT Weather. The 2026-27 calendar builds in five snow days.
This page summarizes two public district pages: the Emergency Alerts page and the School Bell Times 2026-2027. The snow day facts come from the 2026-27 Greenwich Public Schools District Calendar (PDF).
How does Greenwich announce a snow day or delayed opening?
On its Emergency Alerts page, the district says that for inclement weather or other causes such as power outages, the Superintendent or a designee decides on a safe course of action. The decision is generally made and announced between 4:30 a.m. and 4:50 a.m., and the Superintendent can decide at any time based on conditions. After a delayed opening, the district asks parents to keep checking, because a delay can change to a closing if conditions continue or get worse.
The district lists these ways it notifies families of a closing or delayed opening:
- The district website, greenwichschools.org.
- The CT Weather school cancellations page.
- ParentLink: a call to the primary number for each family at approximately 6:00 AM, one call per household.
- Local and regional radio. The district names WGCH 1490AM as among the first to announce changes.
- Television, including Channel 12 and other local and regional stations.
The district says plainly: "Do not rely on any ONE form of communication." It also says not to rely on the ParentLink call alone. If your child is in an after-school program run by an outside group in a school building, the district says to ask that group how it announces closings.
What time is a delayed opening in Greenwich?
The district's School Bell Times page lists a 1-hour and a 2-hour delay start time for every school. The tables below are copied from that page, so check the page if a time looks wrong for your school.

Pre-K classes have their own delay times on the same page. The announcement is what tells you whether the day is a closing or a delay, so check it each time.
What about an unscheduled early release?
The Emergency Alerts page says the district will make every effort to decide before 10:00 a.m. so it can follow the standard early release schedule, but it can decide at any time and dismiss earlier or later than the standard schedule. For unscheduled early releases it uses the district website, WGCH radio, staff Gmail and a ParentLink email to primary contacts. Individual schools may also use their own ParentLink calls or emails. The district suggests that if you won't be available on a stormy day, you check in with your emergency contacts in advance.
The standard early release dismissal times are in Greenwich early dismissals and half days 2026-27, which also lists the planned early release dates.
How many snow days are built into the Greenwich 2026-27 calendar?
Five. The calendar marks the last day for students, Tuesday, June 22, 2027, as including 5 snow days.
What happens if Greenwich uses more than five snow days?
The calendar says that if more snow or storm days are needed, they will be taken from either the remaining days in June or from the spring recess in April. The calendar shows the spring recess as April 12 to 16, 2027, and asks families to plan accordingly.
